Importance of Relative Humidity in the Photo Printing

Introduction

Photo printing has to be done in optimal environmental conditions for quality products. Paper is made of vegetal fibers (cellulose) and is intrinsically hygroscopic, which means that it is very susceptible to changes in relative humidity. For optimum printing and paper storage conditions the relative humidity should be kept between 50% to 60%.

Effects of Uncontrolled Humidity

  • Dimensional variation of paper causes printing misalignments
  • Uncontrolled humidity gives rise to fungal growth which affects printing equipment
  • Paper cracking during automatic feeding
  • High humidity can cause delay in drying of ink on the paper
  • High moisture conditions cause condensation on walls and ceiling of room
  • Discomfort to people working on the machine
  • Excessive moisture is a menace to stored paper. This will give rise to number of rejections.

Advantages of Using Dehumidifiers

  • Controlled humidity to ensure high quality prints
  • Proper drying with optimal environmental conditions
  • Reduction in printing misalignments
  • Reduced cost
  • Increased efficiency
  • Reduced number of rejections.
